TGIF House Tour – Master Bedroom

I have wanted to do a house tour for months but had a few projects I was hoping to complete before sharing. I’ve come to realize I’m never going to be 100% done so I might as well share how they look today even if something changes tomorrow. I’m starting with the Master Bedroom tour for one, because it’s one of the most completed rooms in the house and two, because it’s become one of my favorite spaces. This room is filled with lots of DIY projects which makes it even more special to me.

No Sew Drop Cloth Curtains

dropclothcurtains22I have had a very hard time finding curtains that were budget friendly and the length that I needed for our living room. I’ve seen many different tutorials on drop cloth curtains and decided to give it a shot and I’m SO glad that I did!! I’m not going to go through all the steps because there are lots of DIY tutorials out there that do a great job of showing the steps but I did think I would answer some of the questions I was asked on Instagram. I found this tutorial to be the best for my particular project: http://mariaelenasdecor.blogspot.ca/2013/11/no-sew-outdoor-drop-cloth-curtains-with.html

Price Break Down:

Lowes – 15 ft x 4 ft Drop Cloths – $16.98 each

Hobby Lobby – Large Curtain Grommets – $5 each with 40% off coupon (yes – I took two trips to save my $3)

Stitch Witchery – already had in supplies

Curtain Rods – Tuesday Morning for $9.99 each

If you are considering making some of your own, here are a few things you may find helpful!

  • Wash and Dry them before you start this project. They can shrink up a bit and it also makes them softer and gets rid of the odd smell out of the package.
  • Don’t assume that they are exactly the size it says on package. I did the math on how far apart the grommets should be and it wasn’t exactly 4 ft on either panel and the two were not the exact widths.
  • I debated between the ring clips and grommets but I’m so glad I did the extra work to add the grommets. It was easy to do and I think they give the curtains the appearance that they were more expensive than they were.
  • We hung the curtain rods and I went ahead and put the curtains on them and then I marked where to cut them. I measured where they touched the floor and then added 3 inches. Once I folded and “hemmed” with the stitch witchery that left about a 2.5 inch pool in the floor. These panels ended up being approximately 113 inches long.
  • I have about 60 x 48 inches left from each panel to use on a future project which may be perfect to add length to other curtains or to make pillow covers, etc.

The Calm Before the Storm

20141016_182112b

Well, I have some very exciting news. We are scheduled to close on our house TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY!!! I can hardly believe it myself. I’m so excited and anxious! The next two weeks cannot go by fast enough but I’m trying to enjoy them while I can because honestly, it really is the calm before the storm. Fortunately most of our stuff is still in boxes so we just have to box up some items and disassemble all of our furniture to prepare for the move. I know that closing on our house means lots of MOVING and I mean LOTS. We have the trailer, two storage units and we have random things at my mom’s, my dad’s, and my sisters, a furniture store warehouse, the model home and I’m not going to lie I have two boxes in my office at work. Yes, it’s that bad! So say a prayer for us with this move! It’s a great problem to have but I am dreading moving all of that quite a bit!

On the flip side, I’m so anxious to get our house in perfect order and get it all organized but I know that it’s going to be a work in progress and something we will be working on every night after work and every weekend. I’m hoping to have the house in order for Thanksgiving which gives us about 3.5 weeks to get it all done.

To prepare for the house in the meantime I’ve been trying to do as much as possible before we closed on the house!

  • I finished the side tables for the living room, you can see those here.
  • I re-finished a coffee table that is at an upholstery place getting turned into an ottoman as we speak!
  • Made some coasters that you can see here.
  • I’ve been picking up items here and there for the house but there is so many new things I want for this house and it can’t all be purchased at once!

I still have plans to:

  • Spray Paint the frame of a mirror I had to use in the guest bathroom
  • Paint some book shelves I bought at a garage sale
  • Finish up a few smaller projects of items used to decorate the house

So the next two weeks will be spent enjoying some down time and trying to pack and prepare as much as possible for the BIG move! I am beyond excited and cannot wait to get in our new house and start making it a home! If you want to follow me as we move, follow me on Instagram @hambyhomedecor!

My Living Room Mood Board

I’ve seen several mood boards (aka style boards) for fashion, weddings, and home decor but I’ve never actually created one and I never really understood the whole process of creating one until now. A mood board seemed like the perfect tool to use while building a house. It can be useful to reference at the home design center and especially while out shopping for things to use in that space. I’ve found it really helpful for me while I was out shopping for furniture, rugs and other home décor since the room doesn’t actually exist yet. Usually when I’m out shopping I know the space and know where things are needed but in this case, I’m just using my imagination and hoping it all comes together and looks as great as it does in my head. The mood board helps takes some of that guessing away.

We got several new things for the living room (couches, rug, etc.) but I also wanted to be able to use some of the things I had from our old house. I used brown, tan, red and green in the living room of our last house but I’m using blue and white china in our kitchen and need that to flow into the living room now that we have an open floor plan. I chose darker furniture and rugs for easy maintenance with dogs and future kids but I didn’t want the room to feel too dark so I want to lighten it up with the light accent tables and decor. Creating a mood board helped me narrow down the color palette and overall look and feel of the space. It’s helped keep me from being overwhelmed by the idea of decorating a new large and very open space and also helps keep a cohesive look.

I know there are several mood board sites out there but I decided to use Adobe InDesign and pictures from my phone and the internet to piece together my living room mood board. I know my mood board will continue to change and evolve and I will keep adding to it until the room is complete.

Details of my Living Room Mood Board as it is today:

Color Palette: Brown, Blue, Read, Green and Ivory

Couch: Marbled Brown Leather Couch and Loveseat (Purchased from Restoration Furniture)

Rug: Purchased from Belk

Console Table: Table and Décor details can be found here

Side Table: Purchased two Queen Anne style side tables on Craigslist with plans to paint/distress

Ottoman: Searching for a square coffee table that I can turn into an ottoman similar to this one. I’m thinking solid blue won’t clash with the rug but will be dark enough not to worry about staining.
